Community of Authentic Love

Abundant Life continues its study on true community. True community only comes from Jesus Christ. The community He started is called, “The Church.” The true church of Jesus has nothing to do with buildings, programs, institutions or anything like that. It is people. People with one thing in common: Jesus.
In this community, Jesus calls us to love one another and demonstrate that love. Jesus’ disciple John wrote this to the members of the community and it applies to us today:
7 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.
God is the origin and source of love. Love comes from God and works through us. Because of this truth, we must love one another. This is a command from Jesus himself, therefore it has full divine authority.
How was this love demonstrated? Jesus died for our sins. This is the greatest act of love. We cannot die for anyone’s sins, not even our own. Jesus did this.
Our sins made us enemies of God and separated us from him forever. We deserved God’s wrath and punishment. In his love, God showed us mercy and grace by sending Jesus to take what we deserved.
Now God calls us to demonstrate this same love. Love is demonstrated by giving sacrificially. Not holding back, but showing true generosity. Jesus gave us everything, his whole life. Now we are called to give our whole lives to God in the form of giving to others.
Love is demonstrated by giving with others’ benefit in mind. We did not deserve any blessings from God, yet he gave us all the blessings in heaven in Christ (Ephesians 1:3). When Jesus died we received all the benefit. Therefore, when we show love to one another, it must be for the benefit of someone else.
Why should we love one another? First, it is a command from God.
Second, it was demonstrated to us by God himself. He didn’t just give us a command, he lived it out for our blessing and benefit.
Love demonstrated also proves God’s existence. When we live a life of demonstrating God’s love, it is a way to show God is in us and to show others who God really is.
The greatest act of love is to share the good news of Jesus with someone, because the benefits are eternal when the message is received by faith.
Let’s go out and love one another as God loved us. When we do, we will show the world that we are true followers of Jesus Christ.
34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
