Condemning a condemned world?

You know, I have a problem with what I see in the “Christian” community lately. There is such an air of judgment and condemnation in North America and I believe it is getting in the way of the Gospel.

So, forgive me if I’m wrong. Which, I’m pretty sure I’m not. As Christians IT IS NOT OUR JOB TO CLEAN UP PEOPLE! We need to drop the self-righteous garbage that we are known for and start to show the love of Christ.

We absolutely are allowed to have opinions on hot button topics like gay marriage, abortion, pornography, and drug use. Everyone should take a stand on the things they believe. But taking a stand does not mean standing on the necks of the lost to make our point!

The world is under judgement and condemnation. We are not the ones that will be doing the judging. I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick (living) and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; (2 Timothy 4:1 KJV)

Just because we are not under condemnation does not mean it is our job to rub it in the faces of the lost.

You see, we as Christians should not only understand God’s moral law but do our best to live it. If we are to help reveal sin and the need for a saviour then let’s start with the basics. Like, oh, I don’t know, the 10 commandments, I suppose. We live in a world that does not recognize sin, so why would they respond to us yelling at them about it?!

Let those commands become the schoolmaster that they were intended to be. Not as a sock full of nickels to beat the truth into a lost and already suffering world. That way we can stop being so focused on the hot button things that end up causing the Gospel to get lost. Let’s help people recognize that which is in front of them that they don’t even see!

All I hear lately is getting rich and gay marriage, blah blah blah. I am tired of Christians either using God like a magic genie or attacking one particular group of people because of who they choose as a partner whether I agree or not. You had better believe that our straight kids are doing some pretty bad stuff. What about lying, stealing, or coveting? What does God even consider an “abomination”?

These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren. (Proverbs 6:16-19 KJV)

Listen, there are a lot of things I don’t agree with morally. As a Christian I am under a different set of rules than the world and those rules, if you will, include “grace”. How can we lead people to a saviour that they don’t even understand they need? We shout about a cure for the disease that they don’t even know they have. Sadly when we do it we just send them further from Christ. Everyone that does not accept salvation through repentance and faith in Jesus Christ is not going to have eternal life in Heaven (PERIOD).

You wanna know what I hate more than sin? HELL! So let’s stop oiling the gates of Hell and do like Spurgeon said:

“If sinners be damned, at least let them leap to Hell over our dead bodies. And if they perish, let them perish with our arms wrapped about their knees, imploring them to stay. If Hell must be filled, let it be filled in the teeth of our exertions, and let not one go unwarned and unprayed for.” – Charles H. Spurgeon

Does that sound like anything you hear now in the modern North American evangelical church? Not very often. Most of the time we either hear get rich quick schemes or who is all going to Hell this week!

Should our hearts not be broken for the lost? We have made enemies of those we are commanded to reach with the Gospel! How do we preach hate and then say Jesus loves? How do we preach intolerance when our Father in Heaven tolerates so much from us?

Have we forgotten what we once were and how we once behaved? 8 For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light. (Ephesians 5:8 KJV)

Let me put it into a modern day parable.

Imagine you live in a city that had been condemned, slated for destruction. All of the buildings had notices on them and the news is broadcasting that the city has been slated for complete demolition. Nothing will be left standing. With me so far?

Now what I see in a lot of the Church in North America is we would be walking around handing out more notices that the city has been condemned and yelling at people telling them they are all gonna be destroyed. People would say, “Yeah, we know.” We would just keep telling them but the city is condemned! Then we would leave because we think they hadn’t listened and that they deserved what they would get. We think that we had done our part by yelling at them that they were doomed.

What we need to be doing knocking on every door offering a ride out of town to escape the impending doom. Free rides to safety! No cost to you! We will drive you over to a new city where there is no demolition, no disease, no war, and no poverty. The ride may take a while, and it will get rocky and bumpy, but once we arrive it will be amazing forever!

Let’s spend less time worrying about the sins everyone commits and help lead them to the one that can forgive them in the first place. Like I said in the beginning of this rant, IT IS NOT OUR JOB TO CLEAN THEM UP, ONLY TO LEAD THEM TO THE ONE THAT CAN!
