The Abundant Life men’s group is working through a study series titled, “Stepping Up”. The latest lesson had to do with “vision”. The whole idea is that we need to think about and develop an intentional plan for our lives and families.

What was interesting about this is that several of the people interviewed in the DVD had actually written out a mission statement for their lives and families.

As a group of men we began to talk about this, specifically asking the question, “How do we arrive at this?”

Naturally the best place to start is at the very beginning. What we came up with was this: all followers of Jesus, not just men, should be working on their own spiritual development and discipline.

Proverbs 4:23 says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it” (NIV)

How do we guard our heart? This list isn’t the “final authority” for such things, but it is from our hearts to you:

  • THINK about this. We need to intentionally think about what goes into our heart and lives. We need to intentionally consider the decisions we make and the direction we want to go. We shouldn’t just “wing it” in life.
  • PREPARE for life. We have the Bible. We have prayer. We have the Holy Spirit. We have the church (fellow followers of Jesus). These are resources and tools that will help us prepare for life, for decision-making, for times of trouble and times of success. If we are using these tools we will be ready to take on all circumstances.
  • DAILY discipline. Life happens all day long every day. Our personal spiritual discipline must be 24/7, 365 days per year for all of life.
