Now that we are free because of the person and work of Jesus, what does this new life look like? It looks very, very different from the old way of living because we now have a new motivation, reason and purpose. Jesus gives us a whole new life.

Colossians 3:1 - 2, “1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things. “

We’ve been “raised with Christ”. Colossians 2:20 says we died. Not literally and physically, rather we died to the power of sin in our lives. We are now alive because of Jesus. Therefore we need to have a new view of life.

We need to set our hearts and minds on things above: wisdom, love, joy, forgiveness, healing, holiness, GOD

We need to set our hearts and minds on things above and not on “earthly things”: money, fame, shallow happiness, selfishness, do what I want, ME

We died to these earthly things, meaning we got out from under their authority. Let’s follow what the Bible says and truly get rid of that stuff in our lives:

Colossians 3:5 - 10 5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry. 6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming. 7 You used to walk in these ways, in the life you once lived. 8 But now you must also rid yourselves of all such things as these: anger, rage, malice, slander, and filthy language from your lips. 9 Do not lie to each other, since you have taken off your old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge in the image of its Creator.

We know ourselves, therefore we know how this “list” manifests itself in our own lives. We are to destroy this power over us because we now are under the authority of Jesus. Further to that, verse 6 says that God’s wrath is coming because of this stuff. God’s just, correct and forewarned punishment is on the way for those who think and act like this.

So, we get rid of this stuff and we end up with a vacuum. We will inevitably fall back to our default of sin if we don’t fill this space up with something else. Paul gives the believers in Colosse the answer, which is passed on to us today:

Colossians 3:12 - 15 12 Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. 13 Bear with each other and forgive one another if any of you has a grievance against someone. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. 14 And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. 15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.

With our new life we have a new identity: we are God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved. This means we are not accidents or projects of God. We are chosen by him, set apart by him (holy) and dearly loved by him. He cherishes each one who has faith in Jesus Christ.

Based on this truth, we put on some new clothes. Read the list above again and again. These are powerful attitudes and actions which will result in blessing for us and others. None of it is easy at all. That is why God himself gives us all the resources we need. Those resources begin with the Bible. The Bible shows us the direct teachings and practical examples of how we should think and live. With this raw material in place in our hearts and minds, the Holy Spirit, God himself, will begin his work in our hearts to help us decide to intentionally live out our new life.

In the end, our new life is marked by our new motivation. We don’t work through these changes for our own sake, for our glory or to receive any thanks, reward or credit:

Colossians 3:17, 17 And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

It’s all about Jesus.
