New Pastor - New Congregation
Posted by Brad Quiring on February 3, 2015
Abundant Life Baptist Church and I celebrated a special day on Sunday, February 1, 2015. It was the “induction service” or “installation service” for me as a pastor. Pastor Richard Quiring gave a challenge to the congregation and to me based on 1 Peter 5 and it was followed up by a call to commitment by Phyl Putz, the regional minister for the Northern Plains Churches of the North American Baptist Conference.
Going over 1 Peter 5:1 - 4 we see this challenge:
To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed: 2 Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; 3 not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. 4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.
The leaders of a church are to be shepherds of GOD’S FLOCK. This means the church belongs to God, not to us. But God still gave leaders a responsibility:
- to consider the people in the church to be in our care.
- to watch over them. - to be examples to them.
This is all to be done with a certain attitude:
- not out of obligation, but out of willingness.
- doing it with the attitude of God wanting us to do it
- not pursuing personal, dishonest gain - being EAGER to serve the church
- not being a dictator
For the flock, God also speaks in 1 Peter 5:5
In the same way, you who are younger, submit yourselves to your elders. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because,“God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.”
- submit to the leaders
- be humble toward each other
This is a huge call to all who believe in Jesus Christ and call a particular group their “church” or spiritual home. But it is easy to see that this is the only way we can not only continue together, but to fulfill the call that Jesus gave to every Christian in Matthew 28:18 - 20:
18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
To the family at Abundant Life Baptist Church: It is a privilege to serve you as your pastor. I commit myself to:
- Pray for you Encourage you
- Teach you
- Admonish and correct you according to the Word of God
- Be a leader to you.
I ask you to humbly commit to this:
- Pray for me
- Encourage me
- Teach me Admonish and correct me according to the Word of God
- Lead with me as we seek to bring a new generation and entire community to Christ
In Christ’s love,
