October 19, 2015: Election Day in Canada

Elections are interesting events. I worked as a news reporter for several years and enjoyed elections’ coverage immensely. What was just as fascinating as dealing with candidates was dealing with the supporters of candidates. They were many times more interesting with their passion, spark and dedication to their choice.

In modern social media the power of the passionate supporter has never been stronger. Nor has their voice been louder. The voices can either be inspiring, thought provoking, troubling or outright insulting. Sometimes a tweet or a post can have all elements at once.

As we are on the eve of the next election, I want to call myself and my fellow believers in Jesus to think Biblically as we head to the polls.

1) First and foremost, we are deceiving ourselves if we think a particular leader, party or ideology will “save Canada”, or any other country for that matter. God is the only one who saves. Period.

Psalm 121:1-3, “I will lift up my eyes to the mountains; From where shall my help come? 2My help comes from the LORD, Who made heaven and earth. 3He will not allow your foot to slip; He who keeps you will not slumber.”

Psalm 20:7, “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.”

Who are you trusting? People or God? If you are a Christian and you think some political leader or party has the answer, I challenge you to evaluate the object of your faith and trust. Whoever is elected will have success and failure. God never fails.

2) Your opinion on political parties, candidates and policies is irrelevant. True followers of Jesus have a much higher and noble responsibility regarding government and leadership in general.

1 Timothy 2:1-4, “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.”

PRAY! Note that Paul does not say “Whine, complain and write vitriol-filled rants about government and leaders.”

Remember, when Paul wrote this the government of the day was Rome, who ruled with an iron fist. They were murdering Christians and trying to destroy the church, literally. Yet the call was to pray for them. We need to be doing the same.

3) The election is still on until Monday and then it’s done. It is an election. On Tuesday the sun will rise, the earth will continue to rotate on its axis, the geese will continue to show their intelligence by heading south while the days get colder and we stay. So, dear Christian Brother and Sister: STOP WITH THE INSULTING FACEBOOK POSTS, TWEETS AND ARGUMENTS!

Yes, I am shouting because your own shouting is drowning out reason, wisdom, grace and most of all, Jesus!

Colossians 3:17: “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

Galatians 5:19 – 26, 19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.

Strong Word. Strong God. God never called us to talk about rainbows and unicorns with regards to serious matters. But on serious matters, we had better be talking with the wisdom and power of the Holy Spirit in the name of Jesus, thanking God all the while.

I still think Canada is the greatest country. Be proud and thankful to God for this nation. Pray for our leaders. Show love, mercy and courage. Get out and vote on October 19.
