“Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say, “I will take revenge; I will pay them back,” says the LORD.” Romans 12:19 (NLT)
We know this verse quite well. Paul was quoting Deuteronomy 32:35, where God says that he will personally deal with the enemies of His people. It is not our place to avenge ourselves or our persons. God takes care of us in every way.
This is not to say that God does not permit human legal systems to operate. In fact, the Bible teaches that properly appointed and trained law enforcement and judges are part of his work to punish law breakers, restore loss and establish order in society.
We all want justice, especially when we have been wronged. God promised justice, but in his way and in his time.
Joel warned Israel of coming invasions from their and God’s enemies. It would be a terrible time. Nevertheless, God\s perfect and right judgment was coming:
Joel 3:16 (NIV)
The LORD will roar from Zion
and thunder from Jerusalem;
the earth and the heavens will tremble.
But the LORD will be a refuge for his people,
a stronghold for the people of Israel.
